Craig Lancaster, copy chief at the Billings Gazette, points to a game where you have to identify as many of the 100 most common words in the English language as you can in five minutes.
I got 30. I feel that I should have gotten more. Especially “of.” I missed of. Boo.
Try it out. Tell me how you do in the comments. And, hey, I’ve already spotted you a word.

I got 32. Thanks for that tip.
oh wait! i accidentally hit “stop” at 2 minutes. i bet i could have gotten more!
Now you’re just showing off.
I managed 40, but technically only 39 since you gave me “of.”
I got 45. Now who’s showing off?
I’m starting to think I should have inflated my score a little.
sucker.
I got 35. Perhaps you should have inflated your score.
OK. I just took it again and scored a 276! That’s better.
41, Pbbbbffbbfft!
Why the raspberry? I scored a 276. That’s much higher than 41.
Also a 41. I cheated and copied off of Nathan.
Some of the ones I missed I’m certain I tried – and some of them I can’t believe I didn’t. Oh, well.
I got 37. Not too shabby. (But why didn’t I think of “it”? Why?!)
I’ll also admit I didn’t like it that if it didn’t like a word, you had to delete it by backspacing. Took up time and killed train of thought.
276. Pbbbbfffbbbfttttt!
41. Going through the forms of the irregular verb “to be” helped.
