As is being noted across the wordnerdosphere today, the New York Times Magazine is killing its On Language column, headed for 30 years by William Safire and taken over by Ben Zimmer after Safire died in 2009. It's a damn shame, as On Language was a consistently excellent and often brilliant examination of our evolving language. Zimmer wrote a thoughtful piece for the final column. If you still need your Sunday newspaper language fix, my paper, the Boston Globe, has an excellent language column written by Jan Freeman and Erin McKean. And Ben Zimmer will still be writing at Visual Thesaurus.
